Tikhan Brand Story - An adventure of 58 small heroes

We gave all of our hearts and worked together, day and night, to make this one flower bloom.”

This great work of art that POSCO PLANTEC has presented to the world is the Material Handling System (MHS) named Tikhan, a result of comprehensive engineering skills combining strength and sensibility.

It is a massive mechanism, which includes equipment for material loading unloading transport and transfer, storage, mixture, dust collection, and more for efficient operations. Tikhan is equipped with all the high-tech equipment available. It is born from POSCO PLANTEC’s 30 years of experience and knowledge in related fields, and most importantly from the passion and perseverance of all the employees. Tikhan, which offers strong power and exquisite technology, has emerged as the Khan that even competitors fear in the MHS market.

“We were at a loss because we had no experience in building the equipment. Great technology is required to design, install,
and link this type of large-scale heavy equipment to make it work. In other words, we needed not only maintenance technology,
but also engineering technology. We had all the technology for maintenance, but were greatly lacking in engineering technology
which is the basis. We simply thought that we could add engineering to maintenance, but we encountered many difficulties.”

POSCO PLANTEC stared in 1982 as an ironworks maintenance company.
The company the sought find a product using their technology and experience since establishment, which would give it a competitive edge in the plant market. As a late starter, POSCO PLANTEC needed to select a direction and focus in order to succeed. While searching for a new business, we found that the Material Handling System (MHS) market could continuously expand, confirmed that this was the field the company possessed accumulated technology in, and that it was an area of little interest for heavy industry competitors. POSCO PLANTEC found a niche market to secure a competitive edge.

However, many difficulties were encountered when the project started. The task of designing an entire MHS proved to be challenging. The company had partial technology and maintenance experience, but never actually designed or implemented an entire system.

Personnel from related departments gathered at meeting to discuss impending issue, but the end was nowhere in sight. They continued day and night, but the overall situation could not even guarantee development, The many conflicts between employees and teams were inevitable at the beginning. Even after the design stage, in the assembly process, errors were mad requiring disassembly and starting over again and this repeated.
Even the smallest of errors at the foundation lever become lager as the system moves to the top. And this type of failure in the early stages setback the employees.

However, the did not submit to failure. Rather, this type of failure captured the interest of everyone from top management to the lower level employees. And this served as the opportunity for everyone to get together under undying faith that this project must succeed. The company suddenly adopted the ‘Let’s all take this challenge together!’ attitude.

“We won the competition using innovative methods.
This was a result of the belief that we could do it, and the passion and creativity from within.
We created a new legend that started with our bare hands.”

The research, interest, and support spread like a wildfire throughout the company. Study groups analyzed the problems, and sought out improvement plans through discussion. These activities were carried out through the proactive involvement of all employees, from on-site teams and support teams alike. The company also provided many programs such as ‘Oreum’, which encourages employees to set out on this type of adventure.

The company newsletter introduced and shared anecdotes of employees who overcame difficulties by not giving up despite discouraging situations as well as those of innovation and uplifting messages. The management also did not reprimand the mistakes that arose from challenge. This type of environment was the force behind overcoming difficulties. All the employees became one; sharing faith, consideration, encouragement, and course sentiment, overcoming all hurdles together with their undying passion.
Therefore, POSCO PLANTEC’s MHS brand Tikhan was not created by just a few employees.

It is great creation by all the employees of POSCO PLANTEC.
Their passion and ambitious spirit became one under the slogan of challenge, change, and creation, making the greatest out of nothing. This is how the warriors of POSCO PLANTEC made history in the MHS market.

“We are thankful when our clients tell us, ‘I was surprised by your passion, and taken away by the equipment’s functionality. And I am satisfied with your after - sales service,’ but we also feel sorry. This is is because we are being thanked for doing what we were supposed to do. We know how our clients feel. We also know very well what concerns them.”

Tikhan promised clients “Leave it to us. We will do everything for you from that point on.” It is a very simple and cliche promise, but also one that is hard to keep. However, this is what we promise our clients. This was the pledge of 58 small time heroes to always think from the client’s perspective. It is also the confidence that Tikhan has the ability to keep promises with clients.

This promise includes ours pledge to take the best technology, and customize it to make the most efficient model that our clients need. MHS especially cannot simply be delivered once completed.

We must accurately determine what is our clients want and customize the solution for them. This promise was also made because we know that an MHS is used for at least 30 years after installation, so it must continue to be convenient to use.

What is MHS ?
The process of MHS is to mine iron one, coal, lime stones and transport it through vessels and trucks. They then go through fragmentation, sorting and mixing process. MHS is a facility responsible for all of the above process including transportation and storage as well. It may be applied to iron works, power stations, cement plants and raw material facilities.
